Expendables 4 Review: A Playful, Action-Packed Farewell Resembling “Meg 2: Part 2”,In the realm of sequels, especially those within a franchise of sequels, differentiation can be a challenging endeavor. However, “Expendables 4,” humorously referred to as “Expend4bles” in its marketing, undeniably stands out for its recycling of previously employed material in a context that lacks novelty.

The latter portion of this whimsical, action-packed, and increasingly effects-laden swan song bears a striking resemblance, perhaps even mirroring, the climactic segment of last month’s aquatically saturated Jason Statham extravaganza, “Meg 2: The Trench.”

Here, the rugged Brit once again grapples with and ultimately conquers a sea creature of such magnitude that it renders Moby Dick a mere backyard swimming companion. This unabashed “borrowing” is impossible to overlook for anyone acquainted with “Meg 2,” reaffirming the tireless former male model’s mastery over the seven seas.

The stellar ensemble of macho men, which initially graced the screen in 2010 with the first three entries, featured a lineup that exuded more than sheer physicality. Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Jet Li, and Randy Couture comprised the core cast. Additionally, luminaries like Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Wesley Snipes, Mickey Rourke, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, and Jean-Claude Van Damme made cameo appearances, contributing to the trilogy’s impressive global earnings of nearly $600 million. However, the franchise experienced a substantial revenue decline with its notably inferior third installment in 2014, marking the series’ apparent conclusion at the time.

For a while, there were no discernible indications that this star-studded franchise would experience a resurrection. However, when Stallone decided to rejoin the project, others followed suit, resulting in a robust cast led by Statham.

The initial segment, while unavoidably campy, remains enjoyable, courtesy of the ensemble’s presence. The familiar, and admittedly aging, faces make grand entrances, evoking a sense of homecoming as they convene in a classic, old-time barroom. Here, typical good-natured roughhousing ensues, transporting you back to the days of the Wild West, given the combined years of experience among the cast. Regardless of whether you’re a devoted fan or a casual observer of their careers, witnessing this venerable gang reunited in such numbers exudes a sense of familiarity and comfort. Although the looming specter of impending danger is evident, having endured this far, everyone approaches it with a light-hearted spirit, ready for some fun.

And fun is precisely what unfolds, akin to what one would expect at a class reunion where nearly everyone has crossed the threshold of middle age. In an era when 70 is the new 50, especially in the realm of movie stars, the cast members exhibit remarkable agility and physical prowess that defies their actual ages, whatever they may be. They may playfully lament or jest about the passage of time, but these seasoned actors have, in essence, withstood the test of time, delivering dynamic performances that defy their years, whenever the script permits. The interactions are intermittently engaging and enjoyable. After all, where else could you witness Jason Statham perusing job listings in the want ads?

Yet, beneath the surface frivolity lies more pressing concerns. Has Statham meticulously attended to his morning stubble trimming ritual? Can it be believed that a nuclear bomb is concealed on their vessel, hurtling toward the China Sea? Is there truly a colossal sea creature, an exact replica of the one in “Meg 2,” lurking beneath the waves, poised to devour anything and everything in its path? Could there indeed exist two “Meg 2” scenarios?

Following a whirlwind journey that traverses continents, we find Statham locked in a high-stakes showdown with an aquatic behemoth, a spectacle eerily reminiscent of their previous encounter in “Meg 2.” While it may hold passing interest for the viewer, the déjà vu factor looms large, having witnessed this spectacle just a month prior. One cannot help but wonder if the writers could have conjured something fresh. Perhaps they had intentions to do so, but unforeseen circumstances, such as a writers’ strike, may have disrupted their creative endeavors.

Despite the incidental amusement derived from the presence of numerous renowned stars, each gracing the screen for varying durations, “Expendables 4” is ultimately undermined by its failure to introduce innovative ideas or better utilize the talents of its charismatic ensemble. One thing remains clear: we need not anticipate a “Meg 3” anytime in the near future. It’s time to redirect their creative energies elsewhere.
